FOREIGN AGENTS by Casey Michel (St. Martin’s Press)

We worked with Casey Michel, director of the Combating Kleptocracy Program at the Human Rights Foundation, on his book FOREIGN AGENTS: How American Lobbyists and Lawmakers Threaten Democracy Around the World (St. Martin’s Press). The book weaves together an absolutely jaw-dropping and infuriating story about past and current foreign lobbying in the US and the complicity of white-collar professionals at public relations firms, think tanks, and top law firms.

As the book approached publication, ongoing news about political corruption—from high-profile indictments to scrutiny over foreign lobbying practices—created a natural entry point for Casey’s insights. We framed Foreign Agents as an essential guide to understanding these events within a broader narrative, emphasizing Michel’s expertise in investigative journalism and his background in anti-kleptocracy work. By strategically tying Casey’s work to unfolding stories in the news, we positioned him as a key commentator on issues that reached well beyond the book, successfully securing media coverage that highlighted Foreign Agents as both timely and evergreen reading.
